 Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist Ajmal Kasab, accused for the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, was today hanged at Yerwada Jail in Pune at 7:30 am after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition.

Home minister Sushil Shinde said: "Kasab was hanged at 7:30 am. President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected the Kasab's mercy petition on November 6. President signed the Kasab's death sentence file on November 5 and I also signed it on November 8. Later, on November 8, it was decided that Ajmal Kasab will be hanged on November 21."

According to Maharashtra home minister R R Patil: "26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Ajmal Kasab's mercy petition was rejected on November 8. He also confirmed that Kasab was hanged at about 7:30am on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Lashkar-e-Toiba operative was shifted from Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail to Pune's Yerawada Jail.

The entire process was executed very secretly, home minister said.

"Yes, Kasab has been hanged this (Wednesday) morning at 7.30 a.m. in Yerawada Central Jail," Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who led the 26/11 terror attacks case.

Kasab's end came just five days before the fourth anniversary of the brutal terror attacks. The Nov 26-29, 2008 terror siege had claimed 166 lives.

New Delhi: Renowned playback singer Asha Bhosle’s daughter Varsha Bhosle committed suicide in Mumbai after shooting herself with a revolver at her home in south Mumbai, police said.

Varsha, a singer and columnist, who was in her mid 50s, had attempted suicide earlier on at least two occasions, they said.

In 2008, she had attempted suicide by consuming overdose of sleeping pills after which she was admitted to Jaslok hospital in Mumbai on September 9.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead, they said. The body would be taken to J J Hospital for post mortem, the sources said.

Divorcee Varsha was married to sports writer Hemant Kenkre. She was a free-lance journalist. The second of Asha’s three children, Varsha, had worked as a columnist for The Sunday Observer between 1994 and 1998 and at Rediff between 1997 and 2003.

Asha Bhosle is currently in Singapore to attend MIFTA awards (Marathi Culture awards).

She had also worked as a playback singer in Hindi and Marathi movies, and appeared in concerts with her mother. She also used to write columns for web portals and magazines.

 YSR Congress won the seats comfortably with huge margin, particularly in Rayalaseema region. YSR CP candidate G Srikantha Reddy from Rayachoti won the seat by 56 thousand votes margin. In Polavaram, which is in West Godavari, YSRCP candidate T Balaraju won the seat by a margin of 35 thousand.

From Allagadda and Rayadurgam, YSR CP candidates won the seats by a margin of 23, 24 thousand votes respectively. Other seats like Payakarao Pet, Macharla, Narasanna Pet, Prathipadu, Ongole, Udayagiri, Railway Koduru, Rajampet, Yemmiganuru, Ananthapur, Tirupathi seats have also gone in favour of the YSRCP candidates recording the lead somewhere between 10 thousand to 20 thousand votes.

The prestigious  Nellore Lok Sabha constituency was also bagged by YSRCP. The contest, here,created interest because of  the former minister T Subbirami Reddy, who contested the election on  behalf of Congress, but lost. YSRCP candidate M Rajamohana Reddy won this constituency with a margin of 2,91,745 votes.

Controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda, arrested in an assault case, was on Thursday granted bail by a Ramanagara court.

Judicial First Class Magistrate Komala granted the bail.

Nithyananda was sent to one-day police custody on Wednesday after he surrendered before the court in Ramanagara, about 40 km from Bangalore. He had later filed a bail petition.

The self-styled godman, already facing criminal charges including rape and out on bail after his arrest in 2010, courted fresh trouble when police on June 8 booked him and his followers for allegedly assaulting a mediaperson during a press conference at his ashram at Bidadi near Bangalore.

The press meet was held in the backdrop of a U.S.-based woman alleging that Nithyananda had sexually abused her for five years, a charge that triggered public outrage and protests by Kannada groups.

A search warrant was issued by police against him even as a high-level team of officials and police continued their searches at his ashram.

Nithyananda surrenders : remanded to judicial custody

Nithyananda was 'missing' for the last 48 hours ever since the Karnataka government had ordered his arrest and the sealing of his ashram.

Self-styled godman Nityananda on Wednesday surrendered before the Ramanagara district court in Karnataka, and was remanded to one day's judicial custody.

Earlier on Wednesday, With whereabouts of Nithyananda remaining unknown, the police continued their search at the guru's ashram in Bidadi.

The order was issued by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda in the wake of a state-wide demand for his arrest and closure of the ashram in Bidadi, 35 km from Bangalore.

Nityananda would be arrested in two days, Gowda had told reporters.

The whereabouts of Nityananda are not known as he is believed to have lef this ashram late last Thursday after a stormy press meet.

Gowda said he had ordered a search of the ashram and for a probe into charges by several women that they were sexually exploited by Nityananda.

Steps are also being taken to get the bail of Nityananda in a rape case cancelled, the chief minister said.

Nityananda has been on bail since June 2010 after he was arrested from Solan in Himachal Pradesh. He had gone into hiding in Solan for about a month in March-April 2010 after a Tamil TV channel aired a video showing him indulging in sexual acts.

After being picked up by Karnataka Police, he was in a Bangalore jail for seven weeks.

The latest trouble for the controversial religious leader began after a Kannada TV channel started telecasting complaints by several women that they were sexually exploited by him.

The Congress and Janata Dal-Secular as well as several Kannada groups have been demanding the immediate closure of the ashram and action against Nityananda.

The ashram saw a fracas between media personnel and disciples of Nityananda last Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, Nityananda ordered a reporter out for asking inconvenient questions, which led to protests. The next day, a press meet called by his disciples also ended in chaos.

In a significant move, the Tamilnadu Assembly today passed a Bill shifting back the Tamil New Year to the original month of Chithirai (mid-April), laying to rest the previous DMK government's out of the blue declaration of changing the age-old practice to mid-January.

The Bill tabled in the House by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister S P Shanmuganathan said that members of the public, archealogical experts, pundits, astronomy exponents and others have expressed the opinion that the DMK goverment's 2008 decision to shift the Tamil New Year was against the practice of centuries. 'They requested the government to revert the Tamil New Year to the month of Chithirai,' the Bill said and added that there are a lot of practical difficulties among the people to celebrate Pongal as the Tamil New year Day. 'Hence it has been decided to declare once again the first day of Chithirai as the Tamil New Year day,' the Bill said. When the Bill was tabled, CPI(M) MLA A Soundararajan and CPI legislator Guasekaran said that they opposed the Bill and requested the Speaker to send it to the Standing Committee. Later, the Bill was taken up for discussion through a resolution brought by Finance Minister and Leader of the House O Panneerselvam and was passed as Law. The Tamilnadu government in 2008 decided to declare the first day of the Tamil month Thai as the Tamil New Year Day. According to the previous regime, the decision was taken in view of the 'consensus' amongst Tamil scholars that the first of Thai is the first day of the Tamil year. 'Till now, the people celebrated 14 April (the first of Chithirai, an auspicious month for conducting marriages) as Tamil New Year Day.

Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi (Bengali: পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বাংলা আকাদেমি), popularly known as Bangla Akademi (Bengali: বাংলা আকাদেমি), is the official regulatory body of the Bengali language in West Bengal. Modeled after Bangla Academy of Bangladesh and France’s Académie française, the Bangla Akademi was founded on May 20, 1986 in Kolkata to act as the official authority of the language and is entrusted with the responsibility of reforming Bengali spelling and grammar, compiling dictionaries, encyclopedias and terminologies and promoting Bengali language and culture in West Bengal.

Though the Akademi has no enforcement power over their rules and regulations, yet they are widely accepted by the Governments of West Bengal and Tripura as well as a considerable number of private publishing houses and institutions like the Oxford University Press and the Ramakrishna Mission.

The Akademi is housed in two separate buildings, one at Nandan-Rabindra Sadan Complex (also mentioned as Bangla Akademi-Rabindra Sadan or Nandan-Bangla Akademi Complex during the Akademi festivals and book fairs) in South Kolkata and the other at Rabindra-Okakura Bhaban, Bidhannagar (Salt Lake).

Annadashankar Roy became the first President and Sanat Kumar Chattopadhyay the first secretary of the Akademi. The Bangla Akademi has been successful in extending its activities and programs to different districts of West Bengal and even to other states in India. In Kolkata, the Bangla Akademi organises different programs in collaboration with such bodies like Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Sahitya Akademi, Publishers and Book Sellers' Guild, Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, National Book Trust and also with different universities and cultural organizations.

Kolkata: A consensus to rename West Bengal as Paschimbanga was reached at an all-party meeting on Friday.



Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suggested the new name and unanimity was reached on it, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters after the meeting in the state Assembly.



"It has been unanimously decided that state's new name will be Paschimbanga from now in all languages," he said.



"We wanted a change in the name of the state to get the administrative advantage," he said.

The Chief Minister presided over the meeting attended by Trinamool Congress, besides ally Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) [SUCI(C)], Left Front constituents CPM, CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc as also GJM, among other parties.



Banerjee had earlier empowered Chatterjee and Leader of the Opposition Surjyakanta Mishra to study the new name for the state.

Supreme Court directs TN to implement Samacheer Kalvi

n a setback to the Jayalalithaa government in Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected its plea for scrapping the uniform education system brought in by the earlier DMK government and directed its immediate implementation.

A three-judge bench of Justices J.M. Panchal, Deepak Verma and B.S. Chauhan dismissed the state’s plea that the Uniform System of School Education (Amendment) Act brought into force by the DMK government was sub-standard, lacked quality and was politically motivated.

The apex court also ordered that the act be implemented within 10 days.

Immediately after assuming power, the Jayalalithaa government had moved an amendment to the act on the ground that it was sub-standard and the syllabus prescribed was essentially done to promote the political interest of the then DMK government.

The Madras High Court’s order had struck down the amendment moved by the Jayalalithaa government.

The Tamil Nadu government had defended its decision to defer the implementation of the Act on the ground that it suffered from serious deficiencies.

Senior counsel P.P. Rao, appearing for the state, had said that the curriculum introduced by the previous DMK government “lacked quality, standard and did not conform to the parameters fixed by the NCERT.”

The counsel had said that former Vice-Chancellor of Bhartidasan University Prof Muthukarupan, on whose recommendations the Act was formulated, had complained that the syllabus lacked quality and did not fulfil the suggestion and guidelines prescribed by him.

The state had challenged the high court’s order on the ground that it was “illegal and erroneous.”

The high court had also directed the state government to distribute the textbooks printed under the Uniform System of Education to enable teachers commence classes and to complete the exercise by July 22.

Tamil Nadu has over 1.2 crore students in four streams of school education -- 45,000 state board schools, 11,000 matriculation schools, 25 oriental schools and 50 Anglo-Indian schools, all with separate syllabus, textbooks and schemes of examinations.

‘Samacheer Kalvi’ scheme, aimed at bringing about uniform education, was shelved by Ms. Jayalalithaa in one of her first acts after returning to power.
